Supporting Students with CAPD

Unfortunately, as an educator I have had the thought that my students do not care about their work or misdiagnosed a situation and thought my students were not paying attention when that may not have actually been the case. These students could have Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD). According to Caroline Miller from the Child Mind Institute, CAPD is when a person has trouble registering and remembering what they are hearing. Having a hard time registering what is said can lead to difficulties in the classroom which leads to implications for students' learning. Some of these implications include having difficulty locating sounds and inconsistent response to speech. However, just because a student may CAPD does not mean that their learning should be impacted. Check out my screencast below explaining two types of assistive technology that an educator could use in their classroom.

The hope with these technology supports, in particular the Voice Typing on Google Apps, is that it will give them a tool that they can use to help them keep up with verbal instructions. There are only a couple of examples of types of technology supports an educator could use for their students' learning. I hope these two technology supports will be a good starting point for educators. More importantly though as an educator be sure to find supports that work best for your students.
